Tail of the Taniwha

“I want to do something a bit different with these stories,” was the request of poet and author Courtney Sina Meredith.

Taking inspiration from House of Leaves, the typography of Tail of Taniwha eschews the conventional layout of poetry to accentuate the narratives in the book.

Design Solution

Typography that draws from ergodic literature, a style of layout that “requires effort from the reader, who must participate actively in the construction of the text.”

A cover design that introduces the arrow as a motif for the Taniwha’s tail, which is used throughout the book. The textured gold cover was chosen to evoke the scales of Taniwha.

Book review of Tail of the Taniwha

“Visually, the book excites me. Sometimes the stories are little echo chambers with lines making multiple guest appearances in multiple colours or fonts. It is like a capella singing, with a sweet bitter harmony of voices getting under your skin..”
